You know that smell when you enter a spa? That fresh and scented atmosphere that almost always leaves you feeling a bit more relaxed than you were? You almost want to save a bit in your pocket and take it home with you. Well, that’s why we’ve put together a few tips on how to get your home smelling like the relaxed version of the ‘top of the world’ feeling.
1. Let the stove simmer
A neat, old trick to keep the blues away at home is to whip up a concoction of citrus and other herbs and to just let it simmer on the stove for a while. Soon, the smell will spread through your house and turn your boring Thursday evening into an aromatherapy session at home. The wisp of certain scents is simply very calming to the nerves.
2. Take out the trash
If something smells mucky or funny, it is almost always the trash. Especially the bio-waste. Your bin may not even be full, but any trash that sits for a while tends to develop a trashy musk of its own. So take it out even if it isn’t full yet. Because if you do wait it out, it might get tricky to get rid of the smell after. Just as good smells linger, bad smells do too.
3. Keep it green
Bring the lovely smell of the great green outdoors in. It’s quite simple, bring a lot of plants and keep windows open(of course, don’t keep them open if pesky flies and mosquitoes are a problem). But plants indoors are absolutely lovely. They add a great aesthetic to the room. And as long as you take care of them, they’ll take care of you by circulating the air inside your home and keeping it fresh.
4. Keep your furniture clean
A damp spot on the sofa can smell, a rotting spot on the wooden shelf can attract unwanted pests, a broken refrigerator can smell. Basically, even your furniture can do their bit in deciding the smell of your home. Make sure your clean and maintain your furniture regularly. Or if that’s too much to do, rent out furniture. Companies like Furlenco will take care of maintenance for you.
5. Get baking
Another favourite smell of ours is the smell of something baking in the oven. No perfume spray or essence oil can replace that rich and warm smell of freshly baked goods in the oven. It’s inviting, warm, delicious and has this lovely quality to it that makes it smell like home. We recommend cinnamon rolls or cookies. Nothing beats the aroma baked goodies.
