5 Things to Know Before Moving to Gurugram

Guide to living in Gurugram

Situated to the South of Delhi in the state of Haryana, Gurugram (previously known as Gurgaon) is a classic blend of New York, London, and Mumbai today – in stark contrast to its historic origins from the Mahabharat. To put it simply, it’s a confluence of the extremes. And rightly so. In recent years, rapid industrialisation has given birth to the modern city that we know today. It is reported to have the third highest per capita income in India, with the highest number of professional workers per square kilometres.

Some call it the “Cyber Hub City” whereas others call it the “Heart of India’s Golfing Country” (it boasts of 9 clubs) – whatever be the name, the city has much to offer when it comes to everything hip-and-happy! So if you’re moving to Gurugram, here are some handy tips that can make the transition smoother and definitely safer.

#You Can Easily Get a Cosmopolitan Here – Whether it’s the Drink or the Crowd

Gurugram Guide- Cosmopolitan

Housing 252 branch offices out of the Fortune 500 companies and multiple multinationals, Gurugram is home to the ambitious-minded and of course, is a preferred choice for many Expats. Naturally, this gives rise to chic pubs, shopping malls (26 to be precise), and world-class restaurants that have mushroomed everywhere. A developed city infrastructurally, perhaps its biggest minus is that it has let go of its legendary (quite literally) roots. However, this means you’ll find a cosmopolitan crowd and like-minded people all sailing on the same boat – a huge bonus for any new-comer in an unknown city! In essence, Gurugram is a melting pot of diverse ethnicities and cultural identities.

#Communication & Smart-Spending are Key when Home-Hunting

Live in- set it up together

It goes without saying that Gurugram is an expensive city striving to match global standards. So when renting a home, communicate about the bills and expenses (electricity, maintenance etc.) with your landlord. Or be ready to say goodbye to your salary before the month even begins! Additionally, we suggest that you rent furniture instead of buying it to save big! Browse through Furlenco’s collection of furnishings that can cater to all your needs – that too on pocket-friendly prices.

#Get Used to Scorching Summers & Power Cuts

Gurugram Guide- Sunny Weather

Summers can be unusually hot, sultry and humid; and the problem of frequent power cuts just makes it worse. The solution is simple: Invest in a good inverter/generator or else the get ready to lose your mind!

#All Hail the Metro/Private Transport

Gurugram Guide- Transportation

The city is also known for three things: expensive cars, notorious traffic and a state-of-the-art metro system. So know your routes well and journey on the metro which can be your best bet yet. Or better still, if your budget allows, go for a small car and travel safely. Handy tip: Avoid travelling in bikes as it can be unsafe.

#Embrace an “Unagi” (Aware) State of Mind – Always

Gurugram Guide- Unagi

As Ross Geller would say, you’ve to constantly be aware of your surroundings. Chain snatching, theft, and mugging are more commonplace than you think – especially during the odd hours (late nights). The best suggestion is to always travel in groups of three or more for extra safety!
